Almost every visitor to Cusco feels the altitude a little. Rainbow Mountain goes much higher than the city, so a bit of preparation makes the day safer and far more enjoyable. This is general travel advice, not medical advice: if you have a health condition, talk to your doctor before your trip.
Give yourself time in Cusco first
The best preparation is time. Spend at least one or two days in Cusco, or in the lower Sacred Valley, before a high-altitude day. Keep your first days light and avoid planning the hardest hike right after you land.
Small habits that help
- Drink water regularly, starting the day before.
- Eat light meals and avoid heavy food and a lot of alcohol the night before.
- Sleep well; the pickup is very early.
- Walk slowly and take short breaks. Rushing uphill is the most common mistake.
- Many locals drink coca tea; ask your hotel for it.

Know the warning signs
Headache, nausea, dizziness and unusual tiredness are common signs of altitude sickness. If they appear, tell your guide right away. Our tours carry first aid kits and oxygen, and your guide can decide whether to rest, descend or continue.
Ask your doctor about medication
Some travelers ask their doctor about altitude medication before the trip. Whether it is suitable depends on your health, so this is a conversation for a medical professional, not for a guidebook.
Prefer more personal attention on the mountain? A private group can move at its own pace, which many travelers find reassuring at altitude.
