Near Cusco there is not just one Rainbow Mountain, but three. Each one has the same mineral-striped colors that made the region famous, yet the walk, the crowds and the scenery are very different. This guide helps you pick the right one for your trip.
Vinicunca: the classic
Vinicunca is the mountain you have seen in most photos. It sits at around 5,200 meters above sea level (masl), so the final stretch is steep and slow, and the air is thin. It is also the most visited of the three, which means you share the viewpoint with more people, especially mid-morning.

Choose Vinicunca if the famous view is your priority and you are already comfortable at altitude. Starting early makes a real difference to the light and the crowds.
Palccoyo: gentler and quieter
Palccoyo is reached by a shorter and easier walk, at around 4,100 masl at the start. It offers wide viewpoints over several colored ridges and usually feels calmer. It is a good fit for families, for travelers who are still acclimatizing and for anyone who prefers an easier day.

Pallay Punchu: the less-known alternative
Pallay Punchu, also known as Apu T’acllo, rises to about 4,700 masl. Its red and orange layers fold across the hillside in a way that looks very different from the other two. It receives far fewer visitors, so it suits travelers who want photos without the crowds.

How to choose
- Most iconic view: Vinicunca.
- Easiest walk: Palccoyo.
- Fewest people: Pallay Punchu.
- First days in Cusco: start with Palccoyo or wait until you have acclimatized.
Whichever you choose, all three are long days that begin with an early hotel pickup, so plan to rest the evening before.
