If a one-day visit feels rushed, a two-day trek is a very different experience. Instead of arriving by road, you walk through quiet valleys beneath the snow-capped Ausangate range and reach Rainbow Mountain from the other side.

Why choose the trek

The route gives you time. You see landscapes that day visitors never reach, you spend a night in the mountains and you arrive at the colored slopes with far fewer people around.

The route in short

The first day is spent walking through high Andean scenery and ends at camp. On the second day you cross the high pass, around 5,150 masl, and continue to Rainbow Mountain and the Red Valley before heading back. Exact timings depend on weather and the group’s pace.

Who it is for

This trek suits travelers with good fitness who have already spent a few days at altitude. It is demanding, but it is well within reach with the right preparation and a pace set by your guide.

Plan ahead

  • Arrive in Cusco several days early to acclimatize.
  • Pack warm layers for cold nights and a rain jacket.
  • Bring a refillable bottle and your own medication.
